What is Threading?

Eyebrow trends come and go with the times, but whether you prefer a neat and tidy arch or some boldness for your brows, almost all of us find ourselves needing a little cleaning up and shaping on occasion. There are several ways to get your arches just right, from breaking out the tweezers to using wax.

On the other hand, threading is a centuries-old hair removal process originating from South Asia and the Middle East, that has recently gained popularity in Western countries for its cosmetic applications. This technique is primarily used for shaping or removing hairs from eyebrows. Thin cotton threads are used to remove short rows of hairs to create a better-defined eyebrow. Also, it is used to remove unwanted hair from the entire face and upper lip area, while not being recommended for the arms or legs due to large amounts of coarse hair.

Benefits of Threading vs. Waxing & Tweezing

Eyebrow threading, as opposed to other methods like waxing or tweezing, is often considered far more precise and more gentle on the skin. For instance, waxing typically use heat as well as chemicals (either natural or synthetic) that can cause some skin types to break out and during the removal process. It can likely cause damage to the skin, especially for those using treatments like retinol, which can leave redness or peeling. Definitely not what you would expect when you're getting your brows done.

Tweezing can be less damaging than waxing due to the added precision (one hair at a time), but accidentally poking, scraping or even pulling on the skin with a pair of tweezers can end with breaks in the skin or even infections.

Does threading work for all skin and hair types?

The answer is YES! As the treatment doesn't involve potentially damaging the skin or the use of chemicals, it's especially appropriate for those taking medications that cause skin sensitivity, like retinoids and specific acne medications (which are prone to breaking out after waxing). Especially since threading is great at grabbing the tiniest of hairs (stubbly hairs, short hairs and even peach fuzz) so those with fine brows are set for their big event.

The only exception, anyone who's experiencing heightening sensitivity (like after getting a microdermabrasion or chemical peel) and those who recently had cosmetic surgery should avoid threading. It's recommended that you check with your physician and then come back to us 3-4 weeks after your surgery, to give ample time for your skin to heal prior to booking a threading appointment.
